Shade Guide by Base Hair Color
The single most asked question we receive is: "What color will I actually get?" Honestly answering that question depends on three things — your starting hair color, the shade you choose, and whether you're covering gray. This guide walks through all three.
How Henna Works (in 30 Seconds)
Natural henna and indigo are translucent dyes — they layer onto your existing hair color rather than stripping it like chemical box dye. That means your result is a combination of your starting shade and the dye you apply. A blonde and a brunette using the exact same powder will get two different results.
Predict Your Result by Starting Hair Color
If you start with light blonde hair
- Natural Red / Orange Red: bright copper to fiery red-orange
- Auburn / Wine Red / Burgundy: rich strawberry-blonde to coppery red
- Mahogany / Chestnut: warm reddish-brown
- Light Brown / Medium Brown / Brown: golden-honey to soft caramel brown
- Rich Dark Brown / Black: medium warm brown (you may need a second application for true dark brown/black)
- Note: Blonde hair is highly porous and absorbs color quickly. Strand-test with a shorter processing time first.
If you start with dark blonde / light brown
- Natural Red / Orange Red: rich auburn to copper
- Auburn / Wine Red / Burgundy: deep auburn to wine
- Mahogany / Chestnut: beautiful warm chestnut brown
- Light Brown / Medium Brown: soft natural brown with subtle warmth
- Rich Dark Brown: rich brown
- Black: dark espresso brown (true black usually requires two applications)
If you start with medium brown hair
- Natural Red / Orange Red: subtle red-brown sheen, especially visible in sunlight
- Auburn / Wine Red / Burgundy: visible red tones layered over brown
- Mahogany / Chestnut: deepened warm brown
- Brown / Medium Brown: richer, more dimensional brown
- Rich Dark Brown: deep, rich espresso brown
- Black: near-black brown to true black
If you start with dark brown hair
- Red shades: subtle red sheen visible mainly in direct light. Henna does not lighten dark hair — for visible red, you'd need to pre-lighten chemically (not recommended).
- Mahogany / Chestnut: warm dimensional brown
- Brown / Dark Brown: deepens and adds shine, minimal color shift
- Black: true blue-black
If you start with black hair
- All red shades: not visible. Henna cannot lighten dark hair.
- Mahogany / Chestnut / Brown: shine, conditioning, slight warmth in sunlight
- Rich Dark Brown / Black: deepens to glossy true black
- Note: If your goal is shine and gray coverage on black hair, our pure indigo or Black blend is the right choice.
If you have gray or white hair
Gray and white hair takes henna very intensely — sometimes brighter than expected. To avoid neon-orange gray:
- For brown or black goals: use a two-step process — pure henna first, then pure indigo (or use our pre-mixed brown/black blends).
- For 100% gray coverage: expect 2–3 applications for stable, even color the first time around.
- See our full Gray Coverage Guide for the complete two-step protocol.
How Many Applications to Reach Your Goal Color
| Goal | From light hair | From medium hair | From dark hair |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bright red | 1 application | 1–2 applications | Not achievable without bleaching |
| Auburn | 1 application | 1 application | Subtle, 1–2 applications |
| Medium brown | 1–2 applications | 1 application | 1 application (deepens) |
| Dark brown | 2 applications | 1–2 applications | 1 application |
| True black | 2–3 applications | 2 applications | 1 application |
| Gray coverage | 2 applications (two-step) | 2 applications (two-step) | 2 applications (two-step) |
Five Honest Things About Color Prediction
- Photos lie. Lighting, camera, screen calibration, and the model's starting color all change how a shade looks. Use them as a guide, not a guarantee.
- Porosity matters. Damaged or chemically-treated hair grabs color faster and darker than virgin hair.
- Henna deepens over 48–72 hours. Your day-one color is not your final color. Always wait three days before judging.
- Henna deepens with repeated use. The same blend, applied again 6–8 weeks later, will give a slightly richer result than the first time. This is normal and desirable.
- Strand-test if you're nervous. A 30-minute strand test on a hidden section eliminates guesswork. See our Patch & Strand Test Guide.
