Natural Black Hair Dye: A Real Before-and-After on Textured Hair

Some of the best proof that plant-based color works is a camera, a bathroom, and a customer who does not mind being filmed. In this short video, one of our customers dyes her textured, gray-streaked hair with our Natural Black mix at home. No salon, no harsh chemicals, just a bowl of green paste and a little patience. Here is what happens at each stage, and what you can take from it for your own application.

Before: textured hair with scattered grays

The starting point is dark, coily hair with fine grays showing along the part and crown. This is one of the most common situations we hear about: the hair is mostly dark, but the grays catch the light and make the whole head look lighter and duller than it really is. Box dyes cover that quickly, but many people with textured hair tell us those dyes leave their curls dry and brittle. That is exactly where plant color shines.

Step 1: Mix the powder

Our Natural Black is built from two plants, henna (Lawsonia inermis) and indigo (Indigofera tinctoria), balanced so the result reads as black rather than red or brown. In the video you can see how simple the mix is: powder into a non-metal bowl, warm water stirred in a little at a time until it looks like thick yogurt. Smooth enough to spread, thick enough to stay put on curls. Do not let it sit too long once mixed, because indigo works best fresh. Our timing guide has the exact clock for every stage.

Step 2: Apply from roots to ends

Notice how generous the application is. That is the single most important habit for good coverage, especially on coily hair, where paste can sit on top of the curl pattern without reaching the strand underneath. Work in small sections, start at the roots where the grays are, and press the paste in rather than just painting it on. Do not worry that the hair looks bright green at this point; that is the plant powder, not the final color.

Step 3: Cover and let it work

Once every section is coated, the hair goes under a plastic cap. Keeping it covered and warm keeps the paste moist, and moist paste keeps releasing color. This is the part that asks for patience. Put on a show, make tea, and let the plants do their job.

Step 4: Rinse, then give it 48 hours

Rinse with plain water until it runs clear, and skip the shampoo for now. Freshly applied indigo can look a little green or muddy on day one. Over the next day or two it oxidizes and deepens into its final black. This is why we always say to judge your color after 48 hours, not in the mirror right after rinsing.

After: deep, glossy black

The final shots in the video show the result once the color has settled and the hair has been styled (blown out and set, so the curls are straightened here). What stands out is the shine. Plant color coats the outside of the strand rather than stripping it open, so instead of the flat, matte black some box dyes give, you get a black that reflects light. The grays along the part blend into the rest of the hair.

Tips if you have textured or coily hair

  • Start clean. Wash with shampoo and skip conditioner, oils and leave-ins before coloring; they block the dye from reaching the strand.
  • Section small. Smaller sections mean the paste actually reaches every strand instead of sitting on top of the curl.
  • Use more paste than you think. Thin coverage is the number one cause of patchy results.
  • Protect your hairline. A little oil or balm on the skin keeps the paste from staining it for a few days.
  • Stubborn grays? For the most reliable gray coverage, our two-step henna and indigo method is worth a look.

Before you start

Always do a strand test and a patch test 48 hours before your first application, especially if your hair has been chemically dyed, bleached or relaxed. Plant color behaves differently on chemically treated hair, and a quick test tells you exactly what to expect.
