100% Indigofera tinctoria — the plant that turns henna-dyed hair dark brown, blue-black, or true black. This is step two of natural gray coverage.

Read this part before you buy: indigo cannot dye gray hair on its own. It has no red base to bind to, so on bare gray it grabs unevenly and rinses away. Henna first, indigo second — that is the method, and once you follow it the results are as dark and as permanent as anything from a box.

"I have a lot of gray hair. Wanted something natural instead of the bad chemicals in the hair dye. So I bought the indigo to mix it with Henna. You can't color gray with indigo alone."
— Lilly, verified review

"This is one of the best products I've tried! It's easy to apply and even easier to rinse out. I love how long the product stays on my hair even through shampoos."
— Sheran, verified review

How dark can I go?

  • Dark brown — henna 1 hour, then indigo 45 minutes
  • Deep brown-black — henna 2 hours, then indigo 1 hour
  • True black — henna 2 hours, then indigo 1.5–2 hours, or repeat the indigo step the next day

Longer indigo time means a deeper result. You control the depth, which is the part box dye never gives you.

Already have red or henna-dyed hair?

Then you can use indigo on its own — your existing henna is the base it needs. Two coats will take previously hennaed hair to near-black.

"I was looking for a product that can give me a jet black color without using any henna. I applied 2 coats of this and it worked amazing."
— Scarlett, verified review

How much do I need?

  • Roots and touch-ups — 100g covers about 3 applications
  • Short to chin length — 100g per full application
  • Shoulder length — 200g
  • Long or thick hair — 300g or more

Mostly or fully gray? Add 100g to the guide above. Gray has no pigment of its own and needs more dye to reach the same depth.

How to use it

  1. Mix fresh, right before you apply. Indigo has a short working window — unlike henna it should never sit for hours. Warm water only, to a yogurt-thick paste, and use it within 15–20 minutes.
  2. Apply to hair that has just been hennaed and rinsed, while it is still damp.
  3. Cover and leave 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on the depth you want.
  4. Rinse with water only. Wait 48 hours before shampooing.

The three mistakes that cause disappointment: letting the indigo paste sit too long before applying, shampooing between the two steps, and shampooing too soon after. Avoid those and the color holds. Full walkthrough at hennacosmetics.com.

What to expect

Indigo oxidizes as it develops. Expect a deep green-blue cast for the first several hours, settling to your final brown or black over 48–72 hours. That green stage is normal chemistry, not a failed application. Color then holds through washing and fades gradually rather than growing out in a hard line.
